How to Make a No Sew Rainbow Tutu

There’s something extremely happy about a rainbow tutu. If you want to try your hand at making one but you don’t have a sewing machine — no worries! Below are instructions on how to make a rainbow tutu without the need for any sewing. 

What you can use the tutu for

• Birthday party craft
• Princess dress up party
• Dress ups & make believe 
• Christmas (use white, red, green or gold tulle instead of rainbow)
• Making Rainbow classes

What you need

• Thick elastic (1 metre)
• Tulle
  • preferably soft tulle so it’s doesn’t itch
  • you can also use organza
  • you will need approximately 1 metre of tulle in total (or if using a variety of colours, it is best to get 0.5 metres of each colour)

Instructions

1. Ideally, use soft tulle, not the rough version. It is softer to wear for kids and it tends to sit nicer too.

2. Cut tulle into strips 15 cm wide strips x desired length. For example, according to the height of my daughter, I cut the fabric into 15 cm x 70 cm strips (because I wanted the length of the skirt to be about 35 cm). To measure how long you want the skirt to be, hold the fabric from the waist and measure to where you want the skit to end.  Now double this and cut to this length.  

3. You will need approximately 20-25 of tulle strips (more for organza). I cut one strip then used the first piece as a template. It doesn’t need to be perfect because you can’t really tell once they are tied on the skirt (plus you can simple trim it at a last step if you need to). 

4. Cut a piece of elastic and tie a knot so it makes a circle (make the circle a little smaller than your child’s waist). Alternatively, you can sew the elastic together or use velcro if desired.

5. The diagram below shows how to tie the tulle on the elastic. This is to ensure the material hangs down nicely.

a. Fold the tulle piece in half and lay over the top of the elastic.
b. Thread the loop over the band.
c. Feed the two ends through the loop.
d. Pull down firmly.

6. Repeat until the entire elastic is covered. One the skirt is completed, trim the ends of the tulle to ensure they all sit evenly.

All that is left to do is match it with a Making Rainbows shirt, and let the fun times roll.
